Meet Navarra
Pamplona. Its foundation, on a primitive village vascón, is attributed to Pompey (year 74 BC.). Raised in the Middle Ages by the rise of the Pilgrim's Way and, in 1423, King Charles III the Noble ordered his imprisonment by the merger of the Union Privilege.
Pamplona, surrounded by fortifications and outlined by the Arga, has with many typical spots. The Citadel (ss. xvi-xvii) and the walls recall the garrison character of their origin. Your visit can begin from the heart of the city, the pc. del Castillo. From here we enter through the narrow streets of the historic Pamplona. At the top stands the cathedral (neo-classical facade and Gothic cloisters). With churches such as S. Nicholas (s. xiii, fortress-like) and S. Saturnino (Gothic, ss. Xiii-xv). Other interesting buildings are the Town Hall (front s. xviii), the Counting House (ss. xiii-xv), Palace of Navarre (nineteenth century, to the side, the monument to the outside) and various eighteenth-century palaces that ennoble Casco Antiguo.
Other points of interest: Many, if not all Navarre are dotting their colorful bark. South of Pamplona, Tafalla: city-historic era, retains a neighborhood of narrow streets lined with stately mansions. Interesting sights: Romanesque church of St. Mary, Convent of the Conception, on the hill, the ruins of the fortress of St. Lucia retain two churches. 7 km to the south, Olite, a historic city with beautiful buildings in the pc. Mayor, the Parador Príncipe de Viana (s. xv); castle-palace of the kings of Navarra (s. xv), authentic medieval city. In the southern tip of the province, Tudela, frontier town on the banks of the Ebro-which retains bridge arches s. xiii, "monuments: Cathedral (Romanesque former collegiate), church of the Madeleine (ss. xiii-xv) and S. Nicholas (of brick, Moorish) Admiral noble houses and Sainz.
southwest of the capital, the ancient Estella (Romanesque church of St. Peter). Near the foothills of Aralar, Lecumberri, excellent shopping excursions. North in the valley of Baztán, Elizondo (Palace of the Governors, s. xvi). East on the Route to Santiago, the historic Sangüesa (church of Santa Maria la Real-ss. Xi-xiii-Gothic and Carmen and S. Francisco, castle of the Prince of Viana-s. Xii, today the City Hall, "Palace of the Dukes of Galicia-s. xv-etc.). Also at the start of this route, Puente la Reina, with its famous five-arched bridge (s. xi) over the river Arga, commissioned by the wife of Sancho III the Great to facilitate passage of pilgrims. Aoiz, Roncal, Ochagavía, Burguete ... are also of interest.
